A fine Tunisian Campaign 1943 ‘Battle of Sedjenane’ Immediate M.M. group of six awarded to Private E. Sherratt, 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, who was afterwards killed in action at Salerno in September 1943

M.M. London Gazette 22 April 1943. The recommendation for an Immediate D.C.M. states:

‘At Sedjenane on 4 Mar 43 Private Sherratt volunteered to go out with Lieutenant Walker to oust enemy snipers who were dominating the Tunnel in which the R.A.P. was cut off. Lieut. Walker was shot whilst leading the party, Private Sherratt regardless of personal danger made every attempt to help his officer back but Lieut. Walker was shot again and killed. This man has shown outstanding coolness and bravery under fire on more than one occasion and his example has been an inspiration to his Coy. Later in the action he was wounded by shell fire.’

in the battle of Sedjenane the 6th Lincolns had 21 killed, 98 missing, and 46 wounded.

Edmund Sherratt was killed in action at Salerno on 23 September 1943, aged 23. He was the husband of Hilda E. D. Sherratt, of King’s Lynn, Norfolk. He is buried in the Salerno War Cemetery.
