The Recommendation states: ‘Has been in charge of all victualing accounts of tenders to H.M.S. Defiance since the outbreak of war. He has shown exceptional zeal and devotion to duty in carrying out all the victualing arrangements for all vessels attached to or passing through the Depot ship, and set a splendid example by his determined tackling of difficulties.’
John George Jones was born at Pontypridd, Glamorganshire on 27 July 1899 and enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 17 July 1915. Advanced Ordinary Telegraphist on 14 March 1917, he served during the Great War in H.M.S. Defiance, and was awarded a War gratuity. He transferred to the Supply department on 10 June 1923, and was ultimately advanced to Supply Chief Petty Officer.
