China 1842 (James Pickard, 2nd Lieut., Royal Marines.) fitted with contemporary replacement silver bar suspension, edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise nearly very fine £600-700
James Pickard was born at Washwood Heath, Warwickshire, on 19 July 1820, son of Commander James Pickard, R.N. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Marines on 11 May 1839 joined at Plymouth Headquarters on 1 June 1839. He served aboard H.M.S. Druid on the East India station from July 1839 to April 1843, including operations on the coast of China. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 23 November 1842 and served aboard H.M.S. Fox on the East India station from October 1843 to August 1848. He was promoted to Captain on 23 November 1852, and had further sea-going appointments aboard H.M.S. Rodney in February 1856; in H.M.S. Royal George, April to August 1856, conveying troops from the Crimea to England; in H.M.S. Colossus, August 1856 to June 1857; and H.M.S. Hannibal in the Mediterranean, April 1859 to December 1861. He attended H.M.S. Excellent to study Naval Gunnery, February to May 1862, and was appointed Instructor of Gunnery on 29 May 1863. Brevet Major, 15 December 1864; Lieutenant-Colonel, 13 June 1865; Brevet Colonel, 13 June 1870; Honorary Major-General, 1 August 1870, and retired on Full Pay the same day. Major-General Pickard died on 18 May 1890. Sold with copied record of service.
