James Crookshanks served as a Sergeant with the 78th (Seaforth) Highlanders in India during the Great Sepoy Mutiny, and was present during the Defence of Lucknow as part of Sir Henry Havelock’s 1st Relief Force, and in the subsequent operations which resulted in the final capture of the city. He was discharged on 21 November 1859.
