25 men of the 2nd Rifle Brigade, under Captain A. Fuller-Acland-Hood, took part in the Ashanti Expedition as part of the Special Service Corps.
‘Colour Sergeant Tom Barter joined the Rifle Brigade 1 March 1887, serving all his time in the 2nd Battalion; promoted C/Sergeant May 1897. Took part in the Sudan Campaign of 1898, received the Queen’s and Khedive’s Sudan Medals clasp Khartoum. He died at Kandia, Crete, in 1898, after a short illness from enteric fever, aged 29.
