Adam Mathewson Penman served during the Great War with the 1/1st Fife & Forfar Yeomanry in the Gallipoli theatre of war from 26 September 1915. He subsequently advanced to Sergeant, and served with both the 1st and 6th Battalions of the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. Penman was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade, 31 October 1917. He was wounded in action whilst serving with the 9th (Service) Battalion in March 1918.
