Royal Humane Society, large bronze medal (successful), reverse named ‘Revd. J. W. L Burke, 23rd Jany. 1866’, fitted with ring suspension, edge bruising, very fine £160-200
J. W. L. Burke, Curate of Christchurch, Stafford, saved the life of John Spibey, of Stafford, aged 10 years, when he fell into the River Sow, at New Brigde, Stafford, on 23 January 1866. Burke jumped after him and swam ashore with the lad. He was then treated at home with a hot bath and spirits and water. For this act of lifesaving, Rev. Burke was awarded the Royal Humane Society Medal in Bronze (R.H.S. Case No. 17,714).
