A Norwegian Medal for Heroic Deeds group of four awarded to Captain J. Y. Duncan, Mercantile Marine

James Young Duncan was born in 1890, and after serving as an apprentice Pilot on the Tyne passed exam for his 2nd Class Ticket on 31 August 1914. He served as a Tyne Pilot throughout the Great War, and was awarded the Norwegian Medal for Heroic Deeds on 19 November 1918, on which date he was involved in bringing the cargo ship the S.S. Fifetown from the North Sea into Tyne Dock. He passed exam for his 1st Class Ticket on 14 April 1919, and subsequently served as Pilot of the Armstrong Yard, Armstrong and Walker Shipyards, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Sold with the named Bestowal Certificate for the Coronation Medal; two portrait photographs; the recipient’s Ledger, detailing all his Piloting work, covering the period 5 September 1914 - 24 December 1929; and various other photographs and letters.
