George James Paul St Clair was born on 29 June 1885, son of Commander Lockhart M. St Clair, C.I.E., C.B.E. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on 29 July 1904; Lieutenant, 29 July 1907; Captain, 20 October 1914; Major, 25 September 1916; Lieutenant-Colonel, 11 June 1933; Colonel, 11 June 1937; Acting Major-General, 30 August 1940.
Served in France and Belgium with I Troop R.H.A. from 16 August 1914, taking part in the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, Néry, Marne, Aisne and Messines, being wounded and mentioned in despatches. Staff Captain R.A., France, May 1915 to January 1916; Brigade Major R.A., France, January 1916 to October 1917; 2nd in command Officer Cadet School, January to August 1918; Brigade Major Home Force, August to December 1918. Brigade Major R.A., 2nd London Division, June 1920 to January 1921; G.S.O. 2, Western Command, February 1929 to February 1933; Assistant Adjutant General, October 1937 to December 1939. Commanded Hampshire County Division, February to December 1941. He was Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire in 1953 and High Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1954. Major-General St Clair died on 13 November 1955.
