Herbert Grenfell King was born in Highbury, Middlesex, on 21 January 1889 and, following the outbreak of the Great War, attested for the Royal Engineers on 19 July 1915. He was discharged to a Commission in the 15th (Reserve) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, on 21 January 1916, and served with his new unit on the Western Front. He was killed in action on 22 March 1918 during the Second Battle of the Somme, whilst serving with the 4th Battalion, and is buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, France.
