Naval General Service 1793-1840, 2 clasps, Egypt, Trafalgar (John Robinson.) fitted with silver ribbon buckle, some light marks, otherwise good very fine and correct in all appearances £5000-6000

John Robinson is confirmed on the rolls as an Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. Stately at Egypt, and as Quarter Gunner aboard H.M.S. Polyphemus at Trafalgar. He was born at Meviling in Yorkshire and appears to have joined the Royal Navy in February 1799, aged 24. He joined Stately on 13 July 1799 and served in that ship during the operations in Egypt. The Ships Muster for H.M.S. Polyphemus for the period 1 September to 31 October, 1805, confirms John Robinson’s promotion from A.B. to Quarter Gunner on 1 November 1804, and that he came from Stately, thereby confirming his two-clasp entitlement which is shown on the published rolls as two single entries, a common occurrence for the Egypt clasp which was not authorised until February 1850, and for which the original claimant’s lists have not survived.

Fourteen other men of this name are shown on the rolls for various clasps, including Spartan 1810, Shannon wh Chesapeake, and Venerable 1814.
