D.C.M. London Gazette 4 June 1917; citation London Gazette 9 July 1917:
‘636 Pte. J. Ruddick, M. G. Gds.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During operations his gun was buried, he at once dug it out and cleaned it, and then attended to the wounded and carried them back.’
Only 22 D.C.Ms. awarded to the Guards Machine Gun Regiment, including Guards Machine Gun Company and Machine Gun Guards, during the Great War. This was the first such award to the Regiment and the only one for 1917.
