Lawrence Day served during the Great War with the South Wales Borderers and the 1st Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers on the Western Front. He was taken prisoner of war during the German Spring Offensive - the Battalion strength on the morning of 21 March 1918 was 24 officers and 950 other ranks, by 4pm the following day this had been reduced through casualties and POWs to 7 officers and 450 men.
