Matthew Boulton’s Medal for Trafalgar 1805, white metal, named in the reverse field ‘J. Thompson Cook H.M.S. Spartiate’, contained in a contemporary silver rimmed glazed frame with tall ‘watch-fob’ type suspension, the rim engraved in serif capitals ‘from m. boulton. to the heroes of trafalgar’, obverse lunette missing and some overall corrosion, nearly very fine, the reverse nearly extremely fine £1,400-£1,800
Joseph Thompson served as a cook aboard H.M. Ships Syren (14 July 1783 to 24 May 1791), Prince (25 May 1791 to 26 January 1794), Formidable (27 January 1794 to 9 April 1803), and Spartiate (10 April 1803 to 30 November 1809) in which latter ship he was present at the battle of Trafalgar.
