Punjab 1848-49, 2 clasps, Chilianwala, Goojerat (Major G. R. Talbot, 2nd Eur. Regt.) some minor marks, otherwise good very fine £800-£1,000

George Richard Talbot was born at Calcutta on 18 July 1801, son of John Talbot, Conductor of Ord, who rose from the ranks of the Bengal Artillery and became a Deputy Commissary of Ordnance. A Cadet of 1818, he was appointed Ensign, 1/30th Bengal Native Infantry, 20 September 1819. He transferred as Lieutenant to the 9th N.I. in July 1823, and to the 8th N.I. (late 1/9th) in May 1824; Adjutant, August 1825 to November 1839. Served in the operations against the Kols, January to June 1832, and was afterwards doing duty with the Ramgarh Battalion. He transferred as Captain to the newly-formed 2nd European Regiment in October 1839. Promoted to Major in July 1848, he served in the Second Sikh War and was present at the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat (Medal with 2 clasps). He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel on 24 November 1853, but died at sea on 24 December 1853, on board the Lady Jocelyn. Sold with copied Cadet papers and full record of service.
