Alfred Arnold was born in Clifton, Bedfordshire, and attested for the Bedfordshire Regiment at Bedford on 5 November 1888. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India from 19 November 1889, and, after transferring to the 1st Battalion on 1 October 1891, continued to serve in India until 3 November 1896, seeing action with the Chitral Relief Force in 1895. Transferring to the Army Reserve on 7 November 1896, he was recalled to the Colours on 4 December 1899, and served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 16 December 1899 to 18 November 1901. He was discharged on 21 November 1901, after 13 years and 17 days’ service.
