Charles William Gill attested for the South African Expeditionary Forces at Potchefstroom on 28 January 1918, and served with the 1st South African Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 August 1918. He died from wounds received in the field on 20 October 1918, and is buried in Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
