A. H. T. Daniels was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal whilst serving as a Sick Berth Chief Petty Officer in H.M.S. Mastodon on 9 January 1945, and the Second Award Bar whilst serving in the same rate in H.M.S. Shrapnel on 4 December 1959.
H.M.S. Mastodon (Exbury House, Southampton), was owned by the Rothschild family from 1919, and in 1942 was requisitioned by the Royal Navy for use as a Headquarters, providing the administration for the arming and training of the landing craft that were employed on D-Day, The author Neville Shute served at Mastodon during this time, and his experiences there formed the basis for his novel Requiem for a Wren.
