Charles Walter Frank Hitchings was born in Brighton, Sussex, on 27 September 1915, and attested for the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve on 29 January 1940. He served during the Second World War on full-time service from 25 June 1940 to 29 November 1945, in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany as a Gunner with 2713 Squadron, Royal Air Force Regiment, and was released on 20 February 1946.
