Aplin, 48th, late 28th Regiment, Crimea, 3 clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol; France, Second Empire, Legion of Honour, 5th class, silver, gold and enamel; Turkey, Order of Medjidie, silver, gold and enamel; Turkish Crimea, Sardinian die, mounted as worn from a compound silver buckle bar, enamel damage, edge bruising, worn (4) £40-50

John Guise Rogers Aplin entered the Army in 1837 as an Ensign by purchase in the 28th Regiment. Advanced to Lieutenant by purchase in 1841, he was promoted to Captain in 1845. Serving with the regiment in the Crimea, he was present at the battles of Alma and Inkermann and the siege and fall of Sebastopol. He was wounded while in command of sharpshooters of the the 28th. For his services he was given the brevet of Major and awarded the Legion of Honour 5th Class. Promoted a Major with the 48th Regiment in 1858, he attained the rank of Major-General in 1870 and retired with the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1881. Lieutenant-General J. G. R. Aplin was the father of Major J. G. O. Aplin (see lot 966).
