Charles Govett was born in the Parish of St. George’s, London and originally enlisted in the 1st Royal Dragoons in August 1890, aged 20 years. Transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1897, he was recalled for the duration of hosilities in South Africa in October 1899, and posted to the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons. Govett was discharged in September 1902.
