Edward V, Cross and Pellets coinage, Penny, Dublin, mm. lis, nothing at neck, c for e in edward, rev. quatrefoil in centre, 0.52g/9h (Burns Du2EV; S –). Nearly very fine with a clear mintmark, excessively rare £1,500-2,000
Provenance: Found near Stanford-on-Soar (Leicestershire), 1998.
This style K-derived bust punch has been identified by Jasper Burns as being used on Cross and Pellet coins both in the name of Edward V and Richard III and is allocated to the period April-June 1483. Oisin Mac Conamhna (BNJ 2017, p.120-3), confirms that this assertion is consistent with the known documentary evidence and supports Burns’ attribution. In light of the new discovery this is the first time an Irish penny has come to the market which can reasonably be given to the reign of King Edward V. Just three specimens are known; that illustrated by Burns, p.97, Du2(EV), currently in a private collection, the current piece, and a third of unknown status to the cataloguer. It is noteworthy that the regnal title seen here, edwar[:d:]gr:rex:[angl?], appears to be of the 'English' variety; 'Edward, by the Grace of God, King of England', and is a rendering unrecorded by Burns who has seen and confirmed this specimen.
