Provenance: Bt T. Millett May 2008.

Sir Robert Ker Porter (1777-1842), painter, draughtsman and diplomat, b. Durham, enrolled as an academy student at Somerset House, 1790 and exhibited his colossal panorama, ‘The Storming of Seringapatam’, 120 feet in length, at the Lyceum in 1800. Admission cost one shilling. The picture is said to have been painted by Porter in six weeks, but when the exhibition closed the painting was rolled up and subsequently destroyed by fire. Much of Porter’s later work was sold by Christie’s in March 1843
