W. H Baber first went to France as a Sapper on 20 December 1914 and was mentioned in despatches for his services as a Corporal in the 1st Home Counties Divisional Engineers (London Gazette 1 January 1916, refers), in addition to being awarded the M.M. The latter distinction was most likely in respect of operations on the Somme. He was discharged in April 1919.
