George Lewis, a native of Birmingham, first went to France as a Private in the 18th (Service) Battalion (1st Public Works Pioneers), Middlesex Regiment in November 1915. Having won the M.M. in the interim, he was killed in action on 16 April 1918, aged 31 years. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
