Alfred J. Sale attested for the Bedfordshire Regiment at Shefford, and served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 16 August 1914. Advanced Sergeant, he was awarded his Military Medal in January 1918, most likely for the action at Ridge Wood during the 3rd Battle of Ypres in October to November 1917.
