John W. Newton, a native of New Cross, in Lewisham, London, first went to France as a Private in the 20th Battalion, London Regiment in mid-August 1915. He subsequently transferred to the Machine Gun Corps in April 1916 and was awarded the M.M. for his gallant deeds in the 47th Battalion, possibly in the Cambrai operations.
