Charles Dempsey was born in Bootle, Liverpool, and was the son of John and Delia Dempsey, of 14 George Street, Morecambe, Lancashire. He served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment in the French theatre of war from 4 January 1915.
Lance-Corporal Dempsey was killed in action on the Western Front, 1 October 1918, and is buried in the Joncourt British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
