Hugh Maguire, a native of Co. Leitrim, joined the Royal Irish Constabulary on 8 May 1900. He was stationed in Co. Limerick from 18 September 1900, and then in Co. Longford from 16 January 1909. He was promoted Sergeant on 20 May 1919, and was awarded the Royal Irish Constabulary Medal of Merit for Bravery in 1920, for his role in the defence of the police barracks at Ballinamuck, Co. Longford.
