An interesting R.V.M. group of seven awarded to James Endacott, ‘Reeve of Dartmoor’ with the Duchy of Cornwall Estates, late Army Service Corps

R.V.M. (Silver) 1 January 1947: James Endacott, Reeve of Dartmoor, Duchy of Cornwall.

James Endacott was born in 1889 at Gidleigh, Devon, and was employed with the Duchy of Cornwall Estates, Dartmoor, from 1910. He served with the Army Service Corps in France from 5 December 1915, and was discharged in 1919. Returning to the employ of the Duchy of Cornwall, he held, by 1936, the appointment of Reeve of Dartmoor, effectively a manager whose duties included the enforcement of grazing rights on Dartmoor, his services being recognised in 1947 with the R.V.M. in Silver. He subsequently received the R.V.M. in Gold in December 1960, still a Reeve on Dartmoor, probably upon his retirement after 50 years’ service to the Duchy. He died at Okehampton, Devon, in 1974, aged 84.

Sold with two ribbon bars, a Duchy of Cornwall pin badge, and a trench art brass match safe inscribed ‘Souvenir Armentieres Cpl. J. Endacott A.S.C.’
