Michael Flaher was born in Thurles, County Tipperary, in 1860, and attested for the Royal Irish Regiment on 4 June 1880, having previously served in the Tipperary Artillery. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India, and was discharged with the rank of Lance-Corporal on 8 November 1892.
