Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, December 2004 (when catalogued as ‘scroll suspension damaged and slack’).
A Sepoy of the name Balu, No. 5 Company, 2nd Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, who may well be the same man, was Mentioned in Despatches and recommended for the Indian Order of Merit for his gallantry during the action at Chilas on 5 March 1893 ‘for carrying Subadar Man Sing, who was wounded, out of action, in doing which he was severely wounded himself... by a gun shot wound to the head’ (London Gazette 14 July 1893). Although proposed, no campaign clasp was issued for Chilas.
