William Murray was born in Weymouth, Dorset, in 1862 and attested for the Somerset Light Infantry at Taunton, Somerset, on 14 October 1882. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India and Burma from October 1886 to January 1889, and was discharged on 15 January 1889 due to paralysis of the right arm, the medical officer noting: ‘General health impaired from effects of climate. Possibly aggravated by intemperance.’.
