John C. Adams was born in Plymouth in January 1832. He first entered the service as a Painter aboard H.M.S. Brunswick on 7 June 1858, serving commissions later aboard H.M. Ships Trafalgar (1860-64) and Gladiator (1864-68). Adams joined H.M.S. Rattlesnake 17 August 1870 as a Painter, discharged to H.M.S. Flora as a Painter 1st Class on 20 November 1873 for a month before rejoining Rattlesnake until paid off on 25 March 1874. Pensioned to shore as a Painter 1st Class from Indus 4 July 1878 with 20 years service.
