Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Cape Colony, South Africa 1902 (8064 Pte. C. Vintner. Gren: Gds:) edge bruising and contact marks, fair to fine £140-£180

Charles Vintner was born in Bedford in 1880 and attested there for the Grenadier Guards on 6 May 1899. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 16 January to 6 October 1902, before returning home, and deserted on 29 July 1905. He rejoined his Battalion on 28 November of that year, was convicted by District Court Martial, and forfeited his previous service. He subsequently served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 11 November 1914, and was killed in action between 10 and 13 March 1915 at the battle of Neuve Chapelle. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, France.
