Portrait Miniature on ivory of Sir Arthur Wellesley (85mm x 65mm) circa 1804, attributed to Robert Home (1752-1834), in oval red leather case. Striking similarity to the portrait of Wellesley by Home at Stratfield Saye known as “The Duchess’s Portrait”, but subject, in the case of the miniature, looking directly at viewer and smiling. This personal and private portrait was hung in the Duchess’s bedroom and not on view. It has been suggested that this miniature was a personal image owned by the Duchess. It is known that Home painted two portraits of Wellesley whilst in India where he lived for the latter part of his life. Modest restoration to part of uniform owing to old water damage £100-£150
