Lance Naick Tula (Tola) Ram was mentioned in despatches, London Gazette 14 July 1893, as having ‘distinguished himself’ and being ‘deserving of reward’ for his part in the action at Chilas in March 1893, for which, although proposed, no campaign clasp was issued. His mention was probably for the fairly disastrous sortie from the besieged fort at Chilas into the enemy-held village, in which the commanding officer, Major Averell Daniel, 1st Punjabis, was killed and heavy casualties sustained.
Sold with copied London Gazette despatches for Hunza 1891 and an article on the Chilas uprising of 1892-93 by Peter Duckers.
