Frederick Simpson was born at Gillingham, Kent, and enlisted for the E.I.C. service at Warley Barracks in October 1856, aged 15 years 1 month. He sailed for India on the Sir Thomas Gresham arriving there on 15 February 1857. He served throughout the siege operations on Delhi Ridge and in the storming of Delhi, and afterwards in the operations for the final recapture of Lucknow, February-March 1858. He died at the Headquarters of the Bengal Sappers and Miners in Roorkee on either the 3rd or 12th of August 1858 (sources vary). His medal was claimed and signed for by his father, David Simpson, a Canteen Keeper at Warley Barracks, on 11 November 1861. Simpson was one of approximately 45 British N.C.Os. serving with the Bengal Sappers and Miners during the mutiny, about half of those dying during or shortly after the campaign, the majority, like Simpson, of disease.
