India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Umbeyla (857. H. Softly [sic] H.Ms. 1st. Bn. 7th.Regt.); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (857. Pte. H. Softley, 1-7th. Foot) minor edge nicks, good very fine (2) £280-£320

Henry Softley (also spelt Softly) was born in Gayton, King’s Lynn, Norfolk, and attested there for the 5th Foot on 19 May 1858. He transferred to the 7th Foot on 1 March 1861, and served with the 1st Battalion in India for 9 years, seeing action during the Umbeyla Campaign in 1863. He was discharged on 27 May 1879, after 21 years and 9 days’ service.
