George Snelling was born in London and was a gunsmith by trade. He attested for the Corps of Armourers at Birmingham in June 1867. He was posted as an Armourer Sergeant to the 2nd Battalion, 17th Foot in March 1868, and transferred to the 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards in March 1873.
Snelling served with the Battalion in Egypt, August - November 1892, and was wounded at Tel-El-Kebir, 13 September 1882. He advanced to Staff Armourer Sergeant in April 1886, and was discharged, 18 April 1890, having served 22 years and 318 days.
