Robert Anderson served in Bechuanaland as a Private in the Kaffrarian Rifles. With the same unit, he served in the Second Boer War, firstly as a Regimental Sergeant-Major, then as a Lieutenant at the defence of Wepener, April 1900. For his services during the Boer War he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 2 April 1901). He saw further service during the Natal Rebellion as a Lance-Corporal in the Transvaal Mounted Rifles, and in the Great War as a Temporary Captain with the 5th Kaffrarian Rifles, a Temporary Major with the 4th South African Infantry, and a Major with the 3rd Labour Group 117th P.O.W. Company.
