Christopher Maxfield was born in Marylebone, London, in 1873 and attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment on 9 January 1893. Promoted Corporal on 14 December 1897, he served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War, and was promoted Sergeant on 24 December 1900. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 11 February 1903, and was discharged on 8 January 1905, after 12 years’ service.
