John Tagg was born Croydon, Surrey, in 1880 and attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment at Kingston-on-Thames on 4 January 1899, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 8 May 1901, and then in India from 17 October 1903 to 10 January 1907. He transferred to the Reserve on 14 January 1907 but was recalled to the Colours on 5 August 1914, following the outbreak of the Great War, and served with the 2nd Battalion, as part of the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front from 20 September 1914 to 2 May 1915. He was discharged on 3 January 1916, after 17 years’ service.
