William Hamilton Heath Sinclair Thomson was born on 19 January 1878 and entered the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet on 15 January 1892. Appointed Midshipman in H.M.S. Centurion on 15 October 1894, he was commissioned Sub Lieutenant in H.M.S. Jupiter on 29 August 1898, before undertaking the Gunnery Officers’ Course at the Royal Naval College Greenwich. He served during the Boxer Rebellion in H.M.S. Pique, and was promoted Lieutenant on 31 December 1900. Advanced Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December 1908, he served during the Great War in command of H.M. Torpedo Boat Destroyer Derwent from August 1914, and then in command of H.M. Patrol Boat P-13 from 31 July 1916. He was given the command of the light cruiser H.M.S. Brilliant on 19 January 1917, before serving on the Staff of the Flag Officer Scotland at H.M.S. Crescent at Rosyth from 14 January 1918. He was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Commander on 31 January 1921, and was briefly recalled for War Service in H.M.S. Shrapnel at Southampton during the Second World War.
