John Robert Manley was born in Tower Hamlets, London, in 1895 and attested for the Bedfordshire Regiment on 8 February 1915. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 30 August 1915, and was discharged on 2 June 1918, receiving a Silver War Badge. A tram and bus driver in civilian life, he died in Newham, London, in September 1978.

Sold with the recipient’s Character Certificate of Discharge; 2 Notification of Final Pension Award letters; a large London Transport Executive Certificate of Service for 43 years and 2 months’ service; a photographic image of the recipient as a London bus driver; the recipient’s metal identity tag; and copied Medal Index Card and S.W.B. roll extract; together with the recipient’s wife’s National Registration Identity Card, and their daughter’s Soldier’s Service and Pay Book.

Herbert John Saunders was born at Watford, Hertfordshire, in May 1877 and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Gosport, Hampshire, on 2 February 1897, having previously served in the 4th (Militia) Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. He served with the 3rd Battalion in India from 3 February 1899 to 21 November 1904, and then in Aden from 22 November 1904 to 1 January 1906, and was discharged on 1 February 1909, after 12 years’ service. Following the outbreak of the Great War he enlisted as a Special Reservist in the 3rd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, on 14 August 1914, and served during the Great War with the 7th Battalion on the Western Front from 26 July 1915. He transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 7 April 1919, after a further 4 years and 237 days’ service.

Henry George Munt was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, and attested for the Bedfordshire Regiment at Bedford on 9 February 1916. He served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front from 24 July 1916, and suffered a shell wound to the right thigh on 24 April 1918. He was discharged on 24 March 1919, after 3 years and 104 days’ service, and received a Silver War Badge. He died at home on 24 September 1920, from bronchitis contracted on active service, and is buried under a C.W.G.C. Headstone in Hitchin Cemetery, Hertfordshire.
