Archibald McGilvray was born in Oban, Argyllshire, and attested there for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 19 December 1914, and was killed in action on 18 August 1916, on which date the Battalion was involved in the attack on High Wood, Somme Sector, and suffered 189 casualties. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
