Henry Roberts was born in Orpington, Kent, in 1884 and attested for the Army Service Corps at Bromley, Kent, on 15 December 1914. He served during the Great War with 151 Company, 18th Divisional Train on the Western Front from 25 July 1915, and was awarded the French Croix de Guerre in 1918 (London Gazette 27 April 1918). He was discharged on 4 June 1919.
