John Charles Daniels was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, in 1885 and served pre-Great War in the 5th (Volunteer) Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Emigrating to Australia, he attested for the Australian Imperial Force in Sydney, N.S.W., on 22 February 1915, and served with the 20th Battalion during the Great War in the Gallipoli theatre of War from 2 September 1915, taking part in operations against the Turks near Hill 60 and later at the Nek. He was advanced Sergeant Drummer on 14 March 1916, and served on the Western Front from 24 March 1916, where he was killed in action during the major Allied attack on Pozieres on 27 July 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France.
