George William Cheek was born in Dansburg, Transvaal, and served during the Great War initially with the 4th Mounted Rifles in German South West Africa, before attesting for the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force at Potchefstroom on 24 September 1915, and served with the 2nd South African Infantry on the Western Front. He was killed in action at the Battle of Delville Wood on 18 July 1916, and is buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, France.
