Francis Ernest Surtees Stewart attested for the Durban Light Infantry (1st Infantry) on 1 October 1914, and served with them in German South West Africa. He attested for the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force at Potchefstroom on 26 August 1915, was appointed Lance-Corporal on 6 September 1915, and served with the 2nd South African Infantry on the Western Front from 23 May 1916. He was wounded in action during the Battle of Delville Wood on 20 July 1916, and was discharged ‘being permanently unfit for general War service’ at Wynberg on 15 February 1919.
